How does your product use or challenge conventions AND how does it represent social groups or issues?
In my generation, R&B is extremely popular and it is one of the mainstream genres. Prior to filming, I watched videos of R&B artists like Brent Faiyaz, Jhené Aiko, and SZA. These brought major inspiration to what my group's music video would look like. One thing about R&B music videos is that the video does not generally have to match up with the song's story. This was odd to me at first but it allowed our video to have fewer restrictions. So, we followed the idea that the song lyrics do not have to match the story of the video. The majority of our shots were the same as the videos I had researched. Such as aerial shots, zoom, wide shots, close-ups, tracking shots, and more.
The song “Infrunami” by Steve Lacy is a heartfelt song about the pain someone experiences after losing someone you care for and wanting them back. It is a reminder to cherish what and who you have before it's too late. This is a social issue very present in the world since a lot of people take relationships and friendships for granted. Our music video demonstrates this issue by beginning the video with four girls being awkward and lonely instead of appreciating the world and each other. As the video progresses, the girls begin to cherish the moment and enjoy each other's company which is what the song wants the listeners to do. The instrumental break towards the end of the music video allows the viewers to reflect on what they have and to never take anything or anyone for granted.
How does your product engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
The thing that makes my video special and different from the rest is the simplicity of it. It is a simple yet cute video that makes it different. It is just four girls enjoying a picnic in the park while expressing a prominent social issue in the world. This video falls under a ‘fall aesthetic’ that might attract a lot of viewers. It is fall season after all and the song becomes more popular during this time period. Therefore, the video might attract a few ‘fall lovers’. Also, many people might want to recreate it with their loved ones since it is something everyone can do to cherish each other's presence as well as the world around them.
If my group's music video was professional I believe that the best platform to publish it on would have to be TikTok. This is simply because this song is extremely popular for my generation. It is popular because of the genre and significance of the song, it is an issue that a lot of people can relate to making the song more valuable to some. Also, TikTok is a huge platform that can reach a variety of audiences. By posting the music video on TikTok we might be able to get reactions from people who enjoy this genre of music which is important since they are the major critics. As well as having interactions with people worldwide since the algorithm on TikTok is different for every one of its users.
How did your production skills develop throughout this project?
To begin with, the first thing my group had to do was to agree on a song and idea for the music video. We all have similar music tastes when it comes to R&B so picking an artist was a simple process. We agreed on Steve Lacy because his music fit the aesthetic we were trying to reach with our music video. He has great songs however the song ‘Infrunami’ was the one that stood out for our music video. It is a song that has no official music video so it gave us a lot of creative freedom. After we all agreed on what song we were going to make a music video before. We began to think of ways we could interpret the social issue. We came up with the idea of a ‘fall’ picnic at a park just enjoying each other's presence. This song is popular all year through but while listening to it, many people get reminded of the autumn season. Therefore, we took the opportunity that this project was assigned during the fall season and decided to do a picnic. We all agreed that we needed to subtly demonstrate the social issue that the song signifies. The social issue is the need to want something or someone back after they have departed. We wanted to remind each other as well as the viewers that you must always cherish who and what you have so you do not have regrets later on. When it came to filming we all agreed on what to bring. Katherine brought decorations and sodas, Aryanna brought snacks and utensils, Lyne brought the picnic blanket as well as other snacks, and I brought some snacks and decorations. We picked a beautiful secluded area in the park to film and began the process. Katherine had already created the storyboard so we just had to follow it during the filming process. I believe there was only one scene from the storyboard that was removed at the end which was the one of the four of us running. Although there were a few distractions while filming we were able to get it done perfectly. Editing was the last thing we did, Lyne was in charge of the majority of it because she was the one who kept all the clips. However, we all pitched in different ideas while editing. Finally, we just had to publish it which was an easy process since we had previously done it in our last project for the AICE Media Studies class.
How did you integrate technologies – software, hardware, and online – in this project?
For this project, we had to integrate all sorts of technologies to film, edit, and blog. We chose my friend's phone to film, CapCut to edit, and blogger to blog the process. To begin with, we chose to use my friend's phone to film instead of a camera for many reasons. The first reason was that none of us owned a camera to film. Secondly, we had to choose which phone to use since there were five options (including my sister’s who went with us to help us film.) Most of us lacked the storage and high-quality camera that we desired. Therefore, we decided on my friend Katherine’s phone since it was the one with the best camera quality as well as having the storage we needed. Additionally, to edit the music video we picked CapCut, all of my groupmates (including myself) have worked with CapCut in the past. With CapCut it was easy to insert, remove, and crop all the shots we needed. Adding the music was also a simple task since we learned how to do it with our previous assignment for this class. Since none of us are expert editors using CapCut was the best choice and it resulted in a great music video. Finally, to blog our process we have been using the Blogger app. It is a great app that allows us to publish blogs and edit them with no problem.
